Rushton Farmhouse

Farmhouse. Circa early C17, later alterations. Cob and rubble, colourwashed rough
plaster; brick shafts to stacks; slate roof.
Plan : 3-room plan, lower end to right, hall to left at higher end with a front
lateral stack with an integral 2-storey hall bay; passage between hall and unheated
central room; kitchen to extreme right with a front lateral stack; central room with
later inserted stack at the lower end; front wall of the lower end of the house set
back, probably rebuilt; C19 wing at right-angles to the rear.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 1:1:1 windows; casements of several dates, most
C19, 2 to centre bay with close-set glazing bars. 2 door openings, one to passage
and one inserted into kitchen, simple plank doors.
Interior: the kitchen has 2 large axial ceiling beams, chamfered with large hollow
step stops, fireplace blocked; central room with 2 large axial ceiling beams, also
chamfered with large hollow-stepped stops; hall with ceiling with double-ovolo
moulded cross ceiling beam, and exposed original floor joists. Fireplace blocked
by C20 grate. Passage with a C19 straight-flight staircase.
Roof: replaced in the C19.
