Farmhouse. C17 or earlier origins. Whitewashed plastered cob on stone rubble
footings; wheat reed thatched roof (the wheat reed grown on the farm) with plain
ridge, gabled at ends, outshut roofed with artifical slates; end stacks and axial
stack with brick shafts.
Plan: Single depth main range. 3 rooms wide, probably with a cross or through
passage to left of centre (interior not fully inspected). The house may have
originated as a 2 room and cross or through passage plan with end stacks, the right
hand room added in the C18 possibly as part of a programme of upgrading and
enlargment which may have included the rear outshut which extends the full length of
the range containing a straight stair rising behind the centre room. There is
evidence of a second former through passage between the centre and right hand rooms
providing a way through the house from the front to the rear and then to the farmyard
through the outshut. This passage has been interrupted by a straight stair. The
right hand room is the kitchen but bread ovens are thought to survive in the stack of
the centre room (information from the owner).
Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 5 window front with a C20 front door to left of
centre, probably into a cross passage. Windows either C19 or C20 timber copies of
C19 windows: small-pane sashes flank the front door, other windows are 2- and 3-light
small pane casements. A blocked door, visible internally, formerly gave access to the passage between the centre and right hand rooms.
Interior: Left hand end of the house not inspected. The centre ground floor room has
a C17 chamfered crossbeam with straight cut stops, the right hand room has a slightly
chamfered, probably C18 crossbeam with runout stops. The right hand room has a
partly-blocked fireplace retaining a timber lintel and 2 bread ovens. 2-panel C18
door on the first floor which also has a mid/late C19 fireplace complete with cast
iron grate.
Roof: Apex not inspected. Principal rafters visible upstairs appear to be straight.
A very unspoiled traditional farmhouse: early features not noted may survive behind
modern plaster or in the left hand end of the house.
