6/15 Lower Webbery Farmhouse
GV II
Farmhouse, disused at time of survey (1987). Late C17 or earlier in origin.
Whitewashed rendered cob on stone rubble footings; slate roof, hipped at right end,
gabled at left end; back-to-back fireplaces in an axial stack to right of centre.
Pan: Not entirely clear at survey as interior not inspected but the single depth
south-west facing main range is 3 rooms wide, the unheated left end room possibly a
later addition to the 2 rooms at the right end which are heated from fireplaces in
the axial stack, the front door opening directly into the centre room. 2 rear
outshuts, the rear left outshut cob; the rear right outshut stone and brick with an
asbestos roof, is deeper and taller and seems to be a C19 kitchen or back kitchen
outshut as it has a stack against the rear wall of the house. The centre room
carpentry is C17 but the direct entry suggests that the position of the front door
has been altered, perhaps in the C18 or C19.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 3 window front with a C19 plank front door and 2-,
3- and 4-light small pane C19 timber casements except ground floor left which is a 3-
light C20 replacement, probably in an earlier embrasure.
Interior: Not inspected but retains a chamfered crossbeam to the centre room and a
mid C19 chimney-piece to the right hand room. Other features of interest likely to
survive.
The farmhouse forms a good group with the farmbuildings (q.v.). It is said to have
been disused for 15 years (information from owner). Access was affected by the
construction of the North Devon link road at time of survey.
