Farmhouse. Circa 1680s possibly a remodelling of an earlier building with C19 and
C20 alterations. Coursed dressed stone; slate roof, gabled at ends; 3 rear lateral
stacks with brick shafts.
Plan: The late C17 plan was a single depth 3 room wide arrangement with a left of
centre entrance into a stair hall, 2 principal rooms to the right and probaby a
kitchen to the left. The asymmetry of the plan combined with fashionable late C17
detail suggests a remodelling of an earlier house. At one time, probably in the C19,
the house was divided into 2 dwellings and a second stair has been introduced between
the 2 right hand roms with a blocked doorway in front of it on the front: the stair
projects into the centre room. The late C17 stair has been remodelled on the ground
floor altering the plan to a lobby entrance with a cross passage which gives access
to the left hand room.
Exterior: 2 storeys and attic. Asymmetrical 4 window front with regular
fenestration. C20 brick porch to left of centre, blocked doorway between 2 right
hand windows. 2-light chamfered timber mullioned windows withhigh transoms and stone
voussoirs presumably late C17, with C20 glazing of small pane casements, the window
above the porch smaller but of similar design. The right return has 1 attic and 1
first floor simmlar window; C20 2-leaf glazed door with glazing bars on ground floor
of right return.
Interior: Fine decorated plaster ceiling of the late C17 to ground floor right with
geometrical design mouldings and corner sprays of leaves and cherries built up on
wire or leather. 1 corner is a late C20 repair. The fireplace has a plain timber
lintel and semi-circular hearth back, the original chimney piece is missing. The
centre room had a similarly shaped hearth back but has been remodelled. Original
chimneypiece missing. Fine late C17 dog-leg stair with turned balusters, a moulded
handrail and ball finials to the first floor and attic, which has a similar stair
gallery balustrade. The ground floor to first floor flight has been remodelled and
the balustrade no longer exists. A good late C17 doorframe survives on the first
floor leading off the stair landing with a keyblock motif in moulding on the lintel
and jambs and a 2-panel door.
