Description

CHULMLEIGH
SS 6814-6914
7/3 Bonds Farmhouse
- II
Farmhouse. Probably late C17, remodelled internally in early C20. Rendered stone
rubble and cob, unrendered to rear. Thatch roof, formerly hipped at both ends, now
gable end to left. Brick stacks at each end.
Plan: 2 room and central staircase plan, the left-hand room partitioned axially to
create 2 small service rooms at the rear. Additional direct entry into left-hand
room which is believed at one time to have housed a second staircase suggests the
house may have been divided into 2 occupations.
Exterior: 2 storeys. 3 window range. C19 fenestration intact, all 3 light casements
3 panes per light.
Gabled slate roof to rendered porch. 4 panelled inner door, the upper 2 panels
glazed. C20 lean-to at left end with plank inner door.
Interior: Principally C19 and early C20 joinery intact.
Steep straight-run staircase at rear of entrance passage.
Roof: has pegged A-frame trusses, principally C19 but incorporating some reused C17
timber. Lofted stable attached at left end has corrugated iron roof.
