Village school and house, former school house on site of church house. Circa 1850
with late C19 extension. Local mudstone rubble to cut to rough blocks and set to
rough courses: stone stacks all disused with their shafts removed except 2 with C20
brick chimney shafts; slate roof.
The original range facing south away from churchyard. It contains 3-room plan
house to right (east) and the school to left. Rear corner stack to right end room
and other disused axial stacks. 3 of floor rooms served by projecting front
lateral stacks. School has late C19 single storey crosswing extension. Main block 2
storeys and has restrained Jacobean style.
Nearly symmetrical 7-window front of 3-light mullion-and-upper-transom casements
with cast iron glazing bars holding hexagonal panes of glass. All windows have
flat-headed embrasures with relieving arches of shaped stones. Centre left ground
floor window has C20 leaded glass in same pattern as originals. Centre right
ground floor window replaced by C20 door. Right of centre doorway to house has
panelled door and stone gabled porch with 2-centred outer arch. Large gable porch
left of centre to school. Front door has large overlight glazed in same manner as
the windows. First floor windows interrupted by projecting chimney stacks which
rests on plain corbels either side of small central arch. End wall carried up above
eaves a short distance as flat topped parapets which die into gable ends of roof.
The left one is surmounted by a small brick bellcote. Right end blind except for
C20 replacement casement. Irregular rear elevation, 4 to first floor and 5 to
ground floor of windows similar to those on front. Late C19 school is a gable
ended block with a small gable ended entrance lobby projecting from right side of
front gable. Front of school room and the lobby have Bathstone mullion-and-transom
windows with Tudor arched heads, 3 and 2 lights respectively, and contain minimum
of glazing bars. Slatted ventilator to main gable. Rear gable has plain 2-light
window. Interiors not inspected.
The vicinity of the church contains a varied group of attractive listed buildings.
