- West Serston (Serstone Cottages
on OS)
II
House, formerly 2 cottages. Early C18, outshots rebuilt circa 1978. Main house is
plastered cob on stone rubble footings, up to first floor level; cob stack topped
with C19 brick; thatch roof. Rear kitchen outshot of plastered C20 concrete blocks
with interlocking concrete tile roof.
Originally 2 cottages facing south. The right (eastern) cottage preserves the
original plan comprising a large heated room and small lobby with winder stair. The
left cottage is now one large room. Both had mirror plans either side of central
axial stack serving back-to-back fireplaces. Outshots to rear were rebuilt circa
1978. Main house is 2 storeys.
Overall 4-window front of C19 and C20 replacement casements with glazing bars. Each
former cottage has a basically symmetrical 2-window front with central doorway, both
now with C20 doors and that to right with a C20 monopitch and concrete tile roofed
porch. The main roof is very steeply pitched and hipped each end.
Interior preserves most of the original carpentry. The main rooms have crossbeams
of large scantling with neat unstopped soffit-chamfers. The fireplaces are built of
squared stone rubble with plain oak lintels and include ovens which were relined in
the C19. The winder stair at the right end may be mostly original. The roof is
carried on A-frame trusses with pegged and nailed lap-jointed collars.
