Farmhouse. C17, possibly earlier core, modernised in late C19. Plastered cob on
rubble footings; stone rubble or cob stacks topped with C20 brick; thatch roof,
corrugated iron end slate roofs to outshots.
3-room-and-through-passage plan house facing south with service end room at left
(west) end. Service end room has projecting end stack, hall has axial stack
backing onto passage, and the inner room has projecting rear lateral stack. C19
stairs in wide through passage. Probably secondary outshots to rear either side of
rear passage door. 2 storeys.
Irregular 5-window front comprising mostly late C19 casements with glazing bars and
2 C20 casements without glazing bars. Front passage doorway left of centre is late
C19 partly-glazed door with margin panes containing original coloured glass. The
doorway and service end room windows now lie behind C20 conservatory with
corrugated plastic roof. The hall-inner room crosswall is propped by a C19 or C20
buttress right of centre. Roof is gable-ended to left and hipped to right and the
eaves step up twice towards right end indicating rebuilding work at that end.
Interior: shows mostly the result of late C19 modernisations but the survival of
the original layout suggests that many earlier features probably survive behind C19
plaster. For instance all the fireplaces are blocked by C19 and C20 grates and no
beams show. Also, on the first floor, the trusses have been closed into the
crosswalls and the roofspace is inaccessible although the large scantling and good
finish of the few exposed purlins suggest that a C17 or earlier roof survives
intact.
