House, possibly 2 cottages originally. Mid or late C17, modernised in late C19 and
C20 extension. Plastered cob on rubble footings; cob stacks topped with C19 and C20
brick; thatch roof, corrugated iron to C20 extension.
2-room plan house facing south-south-east, say south, with C20 extension on left
(west) end. From the original build there are 2 rooms of unequal size with
projecting end stacks, both with ovens. The larger room is to left and C20 stairs
inserted into right room. C20 extension to left (west) and late C19-early C20
stables to right. Main block is 2 storeys.
Main block has regular but not quite symmetrical 4-window front of early C20
casements with glazing bars and all first floor windows have thatch gables over
filled with weatherboarding. The front door, right of centre, is C20 with
contemporary gabled and slate-roofed porch. 2-storey flat-roofed extension to left
adds a fifth window to the front. Main roof is gable-ended to right and very
steeply hipped to left.
Interior: the original structure is basically intact. Both fireplaces are built of
stone rubble with oak lintels, soffit-chamfered with scroll stops. Both include C19
ovens, that to left a cloam oven made by Dennis and Milton, Old Pottery, Bideford
according to the stamp. All the floor beams, 2 to left of the cob crosswall and 1
to right are soffit-chamfered and unstopped and the latter is associated with
scratch-moulded joists. Roof of A-frame trusses with pegged lap-jointed collars.
