ST OO NE KENTISBEARE
8/82 Nos 3 & 4 Kentismoor Cottages
5.4.66
II
Range of 2 cottages. Probably late C17 or C18. Kentismoor was still a tract of
wet, uncultivated land when the antiquary, Sir William Pole (1561-1635) wrote.
Roughcast cob on stone footings; hipped and gable-end thatched roof.
Built as a range of single depth cottages with a later wing (probably C19) at right angles to right; no. 3 is heated by an axial stack, no. 4 by a rear lateral external stack, both with brick shafts. 2 storeys.
Exterior Front (south): 5 window range with weatherboarded extension to left.
First-floor casement windows are all C20, 4 under eyebrow eaves, the fifth with
lintel at eaves level. Ground floor: 3 C20 casement windows, with late C20 porches (one to each cottage) and glazed leantos. C20 windows to rear.
Interior: right-hand room (to no. 3) with deeply chamfered cross ceiling beam; the fireplace to this cottage has been renewed, and another room has an unchamfered roughly hewn cross ceiling beam. Fireplace to no. 4 blocked. These cottages run parallel to nos 1 and 2 Kentismoor Cottages (q.v.) and together form a striking group.
