Description

BURLESCOMBE WESTLEIGH
ST 01 NE
5/34 Limekilns at ST 055 170
-
- II
Limekilns. Probably early C19. Stone rubble with brick kiln vats. Set of 3
limekilns built across a steep south-east facing slope. To left an oblong block
contains 2 kilns, both raked out from the front and at the right end another similar is set at a different angle. All have segmental-headed outer arches stepping down and inwards with 2 similar arches to the raking out holes through to the brick-lined vat. They could be loaded from the top of the hillslope.
This is one of a group of limekilns close to the Westleigh Quarry which still
produces limestone.
