- Higher Stiniel
GV II
Bank barn. Late C17 or early C18. Granite rubble with large dressed granite quoins;
thatch roof.
Small bank barn terraced into the hillslope above Higher Stiniel (q.v.). The ground
floor is a stable facing east and the first floor a barn facing west. The stable
front has a doorway with a low segmental head to right and slit window to left, and 2
small unglazed windows above serving the barn. There is a another similar doorway to
the stable in the right (northern) end. The barn is loaded by a doorway in the
western side and has ventilator slits each end. Roof is half-hipped each end.
Interior has plain carpentry detail including a 5-bay roof of A-frame trusses with
pegged lap-jointed collars.
This is a well preserved small bank barn and unusual as an agricultural building
which is still thatched. Furthermore Stiniel is an exceptionally picturesque
Dartmoor hamlet and the barn forms part of a group which includes 3 important listed
farmhouses; Higher Stiniel (q.v), Stinhall (q.v) and Stinhall Cottage (q.v).
