Description

SX 69 SW BELSTONE BELSTONE

3/22 Weigelia Cottage and adjoining
cottage now used as an outbuilding
belonging to Langmeads
GV II

2 cottages, probably one house originally. Late C16 - early C17, modernised and
enlarged in the late C19 probably when house was subdivided and rearranged as 2
cottages. Plastered granite stone rubble with cob wall tops; granite stacks, one
with a granite ashlar chimney shaft; thatch roof. Extension of exposed granite
stone rubble with brick dressings and slate roof.
Plan: T-shaped plan overall. The main block facing south-east is the old part and
it comprises two 2-room plan cottages. Weigelia Cottage is on the right (north-
eastern) end. It has a gable-end entry to an unheated lobby room. The larger room
has an axial stack backing onto the lobby and this room now contains a C19 stair. A
1-room plan C19 extension with gable-end stack projects at right angles to rear.
The adjoining cottage has an axial stack in the party wall backing onto Weigelia
Cottage. The extent of the C19 modernisation and the limited interior access
available at the time of this survey make it impossible to outline the early
development of the house here. Both cottages are 2 storeys.
Exterior: Overall irregular 3-window front of C19 and C20 casements with glazing
bars. The Langmeads Cottage section has a-roughly central doorway containing a C19
plank door. Weigelia Cottage has a gable-end entrance containing a C20 panelled
door behind a contemporary porch. The roof is gable-ended to left and half-hipped
to right. The rear block contains a horned 4-pane sash under a brick segmental
arch.
Interior: only limited access was available to Weigelia Cottage at the time of this
survey. It was largely the result of late C19 modernisation and all earlier
carpentry detail is hidden behind plaster. However the large room has a fine late
C16 - early C17 hooded fireplace of granite ashlar with a hollow-chamfered surround.
Other early features undoubtedly survive in these cottages which apparently have not
been modernised in the C20.
According to the owner of Weigelia Cottage this was once the village school and
school mistresses house.
