Large house. 1896-8. Granite ashlar front (facing north-east away from road) with
random rubble and ashlar dressings to sides and rear; slate roof with crested
ridge tiles and shaped eaves brackets. Gable-ended main block of 2 storeys with
attics. Central staircase plan with single large rooms each side on ground floor.
Gable-end ashlar stacks and axial stacks either side of entrance hall provide each
ground floor room with a fireplace at both ends. 3-storey, flat-roofed service
block behind. 7-window front with chamfered quoins. Large central doorway with
eliptical arch contains glazed double doors under large fanlight with glazing
bars. Original French windows, each 3 panes with 2-pane arched fanlight at ground
floor and identical windows at first floor. All are segmental-headed with
chamfered quoins and voussoirs with prominent keystones. A series of corbels
project at first floor level for missing verandah. Each gable end has bargeboards
decorated with blind arcading, a finial and pendant at the apex and pendants at
eaves level. The service block has smaller windows in similar style and a parapet
with moulded granite coping. Inside high rooms and most original joinery,
plasterwork and fittings survive intact. It is said to have been built for a
London brewer.
