Detached house, formerly a farmhouse. C17, probably incorporating earlier work,
with later alterations and extensions. Cob, stone plinth, plastered, under gabled
end roof, thatched to the front, slated to the rear. Although the building
(excluding C20 additions) appears to conform to the 3-room, cross-passage plan, the
thick cob party wall dividing the 2 right hand rooms (together with the different
roof construction and the slightly recessed plan of the right-hand room front wall)
suggests a 2-room plan, with a C17 or C18 extension. End stacks, external to the
left hand side with 2 set-offs; brick shafts. 2-storeys.
Front: 4-window range; all windows are C20 3-light metal casements; French windows,
and a porch under hipped thatched roof. C20 lean-to extensions at either end, that
to the left projecting slightly, with glazed door. Rear slated outshut; stair
turret under catslide with a 3-light chamfered timber window.
Interior: 3 chamfered axial beams to the right-hand room; 3 similar beams to middle
room, 2 with hollow step stops with bar; muntins and bressumer exposed of 1 passage
screen, unchamfered, pegged; lintels to opposed front and back passage doors,
chamfered with step stops; 2 chamfered cross beams to left hand room, with hollow
step stops. End fireplace with renewed lintel. Newel stairs retain their original
(probably C17) treads and risers.
Roof: 4 probably upper crucks, cranked collars halved, principals morticed and
pegged at apex, trenched purlins, diagonal ridge piece, original rafters.
