HALBERTON
ST 01 SW
2/157
- Higher Shutehanger Farmhouse
- II
Farmhouse. C16, with later alterations and extensions. Stone and cob mix,
plastered under gabled-end slate roof. Formerly a 3-room, through-passage plan, the
lower end to the left of the passage; the parlour end has been largely rebuilt and
enlarged in the late C20. 2-storeys.
Front: 4 window range, all windows late C20, as is the wide, glazed C20 porch under
a tiled roof. End stacks, that to the left, external; axial stack backs onto former
passage; brick shafts, plastered.
Interior: lower end room with chamfered axial beam with hollow step stops; lower
end fireplace with side oven. Hall, cross beam, chamfered with hollow step stop;
bressumer between hall and parlour retains mortices for screen studs and a pointed,
chamfered door arch.
Roof: 3 jointed crucks; morticed and side-pegged at apex; similarily the collars.
Early rafters and battening survives above parlour; the truss over the hall could be
lightly smoke-blackened. The first floor level was substanially higher above the
hall than it was to the adjacent rooms, an indication of possible insertion; but
this has since been levelled.
