II
Farmhouse. Mid C16 origin, rear wing to left added C18 with later alterations, mid
C19 upper end and 2-storey block built with alterations. Granite and slatestone
rubble, granite and Hurdwick dressings, asbestos slate roof; C19 block rendered and
lined out, partially slate-hung, with hipped slate roof.
Originally 3-room and through passage plan, C18 wing added to rear of lower end
providing further heated service rooms, and stair inserted in rear of lower end room
for access; upper end removed and replaced in c. mid C19 by 2-storey cross wing,
passage widened and straight stair inserted to right of passage. Lower end has front
lateral stack to kitchen remaining in original position. Lower end also extended to
left for stabling, probably also in C18. Possibly originally had 2-storey gabled
entrance porch to front, gable removed at time of C19 re-roofing and cross wing to
right built forward to same line as porch.
2 storeys, asymmetrical 4-window range, taller C19 block to right has French window
and 12-pane sash at first floor, cheek to left above lower roof-line slate-hung.
Passage entry has 3-centred arched chamfered Hurdwick stone doorway with masks set in
spandrels, flat-headed roll moulded surround to door head; interior of porch has
benches to sides, Hurdwick stone eaves cornice and keeping hole, granite ceiling,
inner doorway in granite with chamfered 4-centred arch, recessed spandrels with
roundels, C19 4-centred arched 4-panelled door with glazed panels. 2-light casement
above under eaves, with double roll and hollow-moulded jambs and chamfered cill,
lintel cut away. Bay to left has early C19 small 12-pane sash with 4-pane sidelights
and cambered head at ground and first floor, oven projection at base of stack to
left; stable door to end left with 6-pane light under eaves; lean-to at end refaced
in concrete block. Left gable end has central ground floor C20 2-light casement and
C20 casement under eaves, C19 rubble lean-to with half-glazed door to left, hipped
end roof. Right side of wing all slate-hung with 12-pane sash at first floor right
and stack rising from eaves right and left. Rear of wing has French window, 12-pane
sash at first floor, both with cambered brick heads, inner side of wing also has
French window; narrow 2-storey porch built in angle with main range, built out from
rear passage entry, with half-glazed door and 6-pane sash with gauged brick head.
Rear of lower end has at ground floor a C19 3-light casement with iron stanchions and
timber lintel, similar 3-light casement at first floor, tall 8-pane sash to right
lighting rear stair. C18 2-storey rear wing to right has hipped roof and stack to
rear right corner, rear has ground floor 3-light casement and first floor 16-pane
sash, inner side has ground floor 2-light casement and small ventilation opening with
timber lintel, blocked opening under eaves.
Interior passage has lintel remaining in wall to left, door to lower end 6-panelled,
straight stair of early-mid C19 to left with panelling to side and stick balusters, 2
granite steps down to kitchen to left. Kitchen has spice cupboard with door in wall
to passage, also c. 1820 built-in dresser with 2-panelled doors to cupboards and
reeded surround; C18 wooden mantel over fireplace to front lateral stack. Straight
boxed stair to rear. Plain chamfered joists. Rear wing formerly contained dairy.
C19 wing to right has 2 rooms at ground floor, with cornices and shutters to windows.
