Description

WHITCHURCH
SX 57 SW
7/159 Boyton Farmhouse
-
21.3.67 II
Farmhouse. C17, front range added and rear much altered c. 1810, with some C20
alterations. Rubble, slate-hung above rendered plinth, rendered to sides and
whitewashed to rear. Slate roof and gable end stacks to front range, stack to outer
side of rear wing, possibly of the original C17 build.
Early C19 building of single depth plan with central entrance to passage and
principal room to right and left, each heated by gable end stack, stair hall to rear
right. The overall plan is double depth, with service rooms to rear and service stair
to left, incorporating earlier building of uncertain plan, single-storey kitchen
outshut to rear right, possibly original kitchen to rear right, heated by stack to
outer side.
Front of 2 storeys and 3 windows, all C20 casements, ground floor has casement right
and left of central porch with round-arched hood on wooden chamfered posts, 6-
panelled fielded door with fanlight with glazing bars. Left gable end has 4-pane
sash with segmental head at first floor left, small single attic light to left.
Right gable end has tall narrow stair light with round head and C20 replacement
glazing bars, small single attic light; single storey rubble lean-to. Rear has
rubble kitchen outshut to right with chamfered outer wall, C20 door and 2-light
casement. Central bay stepped forward with tall rubble stack to left side, granite
quoins, C20 window at ground and first floor; to left a single-storey lean-to with
corrugated iron roof, 3-pane light and door, C20 window above at first floor of main
range.
Interior Early C19 interior of high quality and unusual plan. The central passage
has wall curved to right and left of entrance, forming a semi-circular inner porch,
and to rear the walls are also curved, forming a circular area, with vaulted ceiling;
pilasters to corners, cornice with Vitruvian scroll frieze and Greek key carved
architraves to doors to principal rooms, except side to door to room to left, which
appears to have been a later C19 alteration, all other doors 4-panelled . Stair well
to rear right has narrow open-well stair with stick balusters, carved string and
wreathed handrail. Room at ground floor right has reeded cornice. At first floor,
panelled doors to principal rooms, front room to right has plain cornice and C19 cast
iron grate. In rear, at ground floor, kitchen outshut has access to front through
granite doorway, 4-centred arched, chamfered and step-stopped, heavy door with studs
and strap hinges; this may have been original door to passage, possibly reset. To
rear left, between kitchen outshut and front room, an unheated room formerly used for
salting, and the rear service stair which is continued to attic level.
