House. Circa early or mid C16; remodelled and extended in circa C17 and C18. Flemish and
English bond red brick, some flared, largely replacing timber-framing. Thatched roof with
half-hipped end and eyebrow eaves. Brick axial and end stacks. PLAN: A long 4-room-plan
range, the right [south] two bays of which were originally open to the roof with three
smoke-blackened trusses and heated from an open hearth fire. The left [north] two bays were
probably added in circa C17 and C18, the northernmost probably built when the walls of the
whole range were rebuilt in brick in the C18. Late C19 or C20 outshut at rear. Adjoining
house, Summer Place, forms cross-wing at right [south] end EXTERIOR: 1-storey and attic.
Asymmetrical 4-window range. C20 3-light casements on ground floor and 2-light attic
casements under eyebrow eaves. Plank door to right of centre with C20 wooden canopy.
Painted brick single-storey outshut at the rear with eyebrow dormer above. At north end C20
balcony to French casement on first floor. INTERIOR Right [south] room has large
chamfered axial beam without stops and with exposed unchamferedjoists; brick fireplace with
cambered chamfered lintel with runout stops. Smaller centre right room has large chamfered
axial beam without stops and with unchamferedjoists. Centre left room has chamfered axial
beam with hollow step stops and exposed unchamferedjoists; brick fireplace with unchamfered
lintel and oven. Left room has chamfered axial beam with runout stops and exposed
unchamfered joists. Jowled posts, curved braces to tie-beam and queen-posts and collars; the
three trusses to the two south bays are smoke-blackened, the northernmost truss of the three
is clean on its north side.
