Description

OKEHAMPTON HAMLETS
SX 59 NE

4/99 Hilltown Farmhouse
-

- II

House, formerly farmhouse. Circa late C17 with C20 additions and alterations.
Plastered stone rubble walls. Gable ended slate roof. Tall plastered stone rubble
stacks at each gable end, the left-hand one projects slightly.
Originally 2 room plan with central passage, both rooms heated by gable end
fireplace. Probably in the early C20 the passage was blocked at the rear by stairs
and in the mid C20 a rear addition was built.
2 storeys. Asymmetrical 4 window front, 2 to ground floor, of later C20 small-paned
casements 2-light to 1st floor 3-light to ground floor. C20 gabled porch at centre
with part glazed door. At rear is C20 flat-roofed 2 storey addition. C19 or C20
outbuiding extension at right gable end.
Interior: The fireplace in the left-hand room has had its lintel renewed and
lowered but retains its original chamfered granite jambs. The fireplace in the
right-hand room is similar but with a higher plain wooden lintel which may also be a
replacement. The feet of the roof trusses are not visible on the 1st floor and
unlikely to be original.
