Stone Farmhouse

II
Farmhouse associated with a planned farmstead. Mid C19 (newspaper cutting of 1855
refers to house in sale particulars as being newly-built). Rendered stone rubble
walls. Hipped slate roof. 3 rendered stacks are at left-hand end, one axial
towards the right-hand end and one axial offset front the ridge at the rear.
Rectangular double depth plan with entrance/stair hall to left of centre and
principal room to left and right of it. Dairy at right-hand end with kitchen and
other service rooms at rear.
2 storeys. Asymmetrical 4-window front of mid C19 hornless 12-pane sashes on 1st
floor and late C20 PVC French windows in original openings to ground floor.
Original porch to left of centre is of granite with pillars at the front and
pilasters at the rear which have moulded capitals, moulded cornice above. Probably
original panelled door which has had the top panels replaced by glass. The rear
elevation is very unaltered with 4 windows asymmetrically placed which are C19 small
paned 2- and 3-light casements. Original 6-panel door to right of centre.
Interior: The kitchen has an open fireplace with roughly dressed square granite
lintel and jambs. Surprisingly plain staircase which has open string, wreathed
handrail and stick balusters which also take the place of newels. The right-hand
principal room has 2 original arched recesses which have moulded pilasters and flank
the chimney breast. The original chimneypieces have been removed or the fireplaces
blocked.
This is the farmhouse to a planned mid C19 farmstead (q.v.) situated immediately to
its rear.
