5/158 Barn at Rowtry
II
Barn, incorporating former cottage. C17, touch altered probably in early C20. Cob
walls, partly rendered. Corrugated iron roof hipped at left-hand end, gabled to
right.
Plan: at present divided into 2 sections by solid wall - larger threshing barn to
left, right-hand section was formerly a cottage with a gable end fireplace and
appears to have originated as such, although its plan is unclear as it now functions
as an animal house.
Exterior: Single storey barn to left, right-hand part is 2-storey. Asymmetrical
front with cart entrance at left-hand end and a small leanto to left of centre with
a small window to its right. Doorway at centre with loading door above. To right
of centre is C17 chamfered wooden doorframe, above and to the left of it is an
original 2-light chamfered wooden mullion window.
Interior: the cottage part has a fireplace with chamfered wooden lintel and well-
finished chamfered cross beams. Over the whole of the building the original roof
trusses survive consisting of straight principals with threaded purlins and curved
collars halved into the trusses.
