House, now incorporating shop. Late C15 or early C16 extensively remodelled and
extended in C19. Plastered and exposed stone rubble walls with some granite
ashlar. Gable ended slate roof. 2 brick gable end stacks. Projecting original
front lateral stack of stone rubble with granite ashlar quoins and tall shaft with
tapering cap with moulded dripcourse.
Plan: originally probably 3-room and through passage plan but now very much
altered. What survives of the early house is probably just the passage to the left
and the hall to its right with projecting window bay and adjoining lateral stack.
The whole building has been heavily remodelled internally in the C19, the inner room
rebuilt as a shop and a late C19 wing added at the rear.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 3-window front with shop to right and projecting
gabled bay window at centre. To left is original 2-centred moulded granite arched
doorway with arched hoodmould and C20 plank double doors. Early-mid C19 16-pane
sash window above. Chimney stack projects immediately to right of doorway with
large window bay beyond it and a chamfered plinth extends around both. On the
ground floor the bay consists of an ornate 8-light mullion window which includes 1
light on each side. The lights have 4-centred arched heads and 4 original mullions
survive which are ornately carved with a delicate leaf design which continues round
the square head above each light. The other 3 mullions, presumably replacements,
are of granite, moulded at the top and bottom. On the first floor is a C19 3-light
transomed window with leaded panes. The gable has C19 decorative bargeboard and
finial. A small stone roughly inscribed with the date 1689 is above the mullion
window but was actually found in the garden of the house and placed here earlier
this century. To the right of the bay is a circa late C19 double shop front the
right-hand part which also has a late C19 first floor shop showroom window above, an
interesting feature.
Interior: early feature may survive, particularly a fireplace, but they are
completely concealed by C19 and C20 alterations. The roof was totally replaced in
the C19.
