House formerly farmhouse. Early C16 with modifications and C17 addition, modernised
in late C20. Rendered cob and rubble walls. Hipped thatch roof, gabled to rear
wing. 2 rendered brick stacks, 1 axial to main range, one at gable end of rear
wing.
Plan: originally 3-room-and-through-passage plan with hall and inner room at least
open to the roof and central hearth to hall. Floored in circa early C17 and hall
stack inserted backing onto passage, lower room to left may also have been
lengthened at this time. 1-room heated rear wing added behind inner room also
probably in early C17. In C20 partition at lower side of passge was removed and
main entrance made into hall.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 3-window front of 1 and 2-light late C20
casements with top opening lights. C20 thatch roofed porch to right of centre with
panelled door behind. Wing extends behind right-hand end.
Interior: hall has chamfered cross beams with ogee stops. Its fireplace has a
moulded wooden lintel. Lower room has chamfered cross beams with hollow step stops.
Inner room has chamfered axial beam. On its rear wall is a C16 6-light unglazed
wooden mullion window with diamond section mullions. Rear wing has chamfered cross
beams with straight-cut stops. It has a small fireplace with chamfered and stopped
wooden lintel. 2 C17 chamfered wooden doorframes survive on 1st floor with old
studded plank doors.
Roof: earliest roof structure survives over inner room. Consisting of one smoke-
blackened truss with morticed curved collar and diagonal ridge. Some sooted rafters
also survive and a short blackened post in the top of the solid wall at lower end of
inner room. Over the lower end is a C17 roof with 3 straight principals which have
trenched purlins and dovetail halved collars. Over the rear wing one cruck form
truss survives with trenched purlins but lack of access to the roof-space above it
prevents examination of further details
