Farmhouse. C17, considerably remodelled and extended in later C19.
It is possible that the C19 alterations were by George Devey, responsible for
designing the nearby Broomford Manor (q.v.).
Mostly rendered rubble walls but parts are exposed stonework suggesting that these
are the later additions. Gable ended slate roof. 2 brick stacks - one axial and
one at rear gable end. Axial granite ashlar stack.
Plan: original plan not quite clear but probably of 1-shaped plan, the original
front 2-room range now comprising the rear cross-wing with a 1-room wing behind its
right end now forming the present front. This wing was extended in the later C19
with a porch added and a rear wing built onto it parallel to the earlier 2-room
range.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 4 window front with 2 storey gabled porch to
left of centre. Complete later C19 fenestration of 3 and 4-light ovolo-moulded
wooden mullion windows apart from the outbuilding section at the right-hand end
which has simpler casement windows. The left-hand ground floor window is a 5-light
canted bay. The porch has a roundheaded doorway with a C19 4-panelled inner door.
Contemporary low wrought iron railings in front of house.
Interior: the rear wing has C17 chamfered ceiling beams with hollow step stops.
This is a distinctive looking house in a very prominent position notable for a
fairly high quality C19 remodelling whichmybeattributable to a major
Victorian architect sinceUiis farm is part of the Broomford Manor estate.
