Farmhouse. Probably late C15 or early C16, altered and enlarged probably in the
early C17. Rendered cob with half-hipped wheatstraw thatched roof. Rendered lateral
stack with later brick top and brick end and axial stacks.
Plan and development: Three-room and cross-/through-passage plan, facing south
(ground falls to right). Probably formerly with an open hall, possibly open to the
roof from end to end. Circa 1500 house consisting of hall with passage and service
room to right and probaby with inner room to the left. Early C17 alterations
including insertion of first floor in hall (or if house completed infloored in other
rooms too), insertion of external lateral stack to front of hall including the full-
height square-bay to its left (bay possibly lit former open hall), insertion of
external end stack to former service room and probable enlargement of former inner
room with end stack. Its possible that the Medieval house had no inner room and
that this is an addition of the early C17. Probably mid - C17 one-roomed addition at
left-hand end (see lower roof-line) with integral end stack (now truncated). The
left-hand one-roomed addition was probably a separate small cottage (see separate
entrance and staircase and lack of internal connection with rest of house) and is now
used as an outhouse. Two storeys.
Exterior: Asymmetrical-fenestrated front with 5 windows to first floor and 3 to
ground floor, mostly late C19 and C20 two-light wooden casements. Small unglazed
first floor wooden window to left (possibly late C17 or C18). Passage entrance to
right of stack with C20 lean-to porch. C19 boarded wooden door to left-hand
addition. Small stair window at rear.
Interior: Access to most of interior denied. Right-hand ground floor room (present
kitchen) has chamfered cross beam with ogee stops. Left-hand ground-floor room (mid
C17 addition) has chamfered spine beam, open fireplace with wooden lintel and old
staircase in corner.
The house forms part of a small farmstead group, including barn (q.v.) and requires a
detailed inspection.
