4/78 Old South Heale Farmhouse (formerly
4.10.60 listed as South Heale)
GV II
Farmhouse. Dated 1703 (internally), probably enlarged and remodelled in the late C18
or early C19. Minor late C19 and late C20 alterations and additions. Rendered over
cob. Gable-ended slate roofs (slightly larger slates to right-hand part). End
stacks with brick top sections.
Plan and development: Early C18 two-room central-entrance plan with external end
stacks (facing west). Probably early C19 addition to right (with higher roof-line),
has principal room to right with integral end stack and smaller room to left, with
entrance to front. Early C18 block probably also remodelled at the same time. Late
C19 lean-to outshut to left-hand gable end and late C20 flat-roofed addition at rear
of left-hand end. Two storeys with minor one-storey additions.
Exterior: Left-hand block has symmetrical 3-bay front; late C19 two-light small-
paned wooden casements to first floor and ground floor to right and probably C20 (see
horns to upper leaf) 12-pane glazing bar sash to ground floor at left. Central
doorway with late C20 two-leaf boarded door and beaded and pegged wooden frame.
Probably C19 gabled porch with side benches. Right-hand block has 2 first-floor two-
light small-paned wooden casements (left-hand one C19 and right-hand one a late C20
replacement) and ground-floor C20 (see horns to top leaf) 12-pane glazing bar sash.
Doorway to left has C19 six-panelled door with beaded pegged wooden frame and 3-part
rectangular overlight. Gabled porch with side benches.
Interior: Large open fireplace in right-hand ground-floor room of the left-hand
(early C18) block with splayed stone jambs and chamfered wooden lintel with stepped
stops, and inscribed: "IFM" and "1703". Spit rack above fireplace. Bench along
front wall and old cream hob in rear wall. Ground-floor room of right-hand (c.1800)
block has moulded plaster cornice and late C18 or early C19 four-panelled door with
pegged beaded frame. Fireplace has chimney-piece with Ionic columns. Probably
introduced late C17 pedimented doorcase.
Old South Heale Farmhouse is part of a small farmstead group which also includes a
barn with attached farmyard wall (q.v.).
