Gate and gate piers. Probably mid - to late C19, by Cockeys of Frome. Restored in
the late C20. Pair of circular cast-iron gate piers and wrought-iron gate. Plain
columnar piers with moulded bases and moulded capitals with globe finials (that on
the hanging pier absent at time of survey - January 1988). Each pier with
superscribed lettering: "COCKEY. FROME". Six-bar gate with 2 pairs of diagonal
braces. The top of the gate is attached to the cap of the hangine pier which itself
turns on hidden bearings, and the bottom of the gate slides around the circumference
of the base of the pier. Sliding latch on gate with provision for padlock.
The gateway marks the entrance to the farmyard at Bale's Ash (q.v.). It is notable
for its ingenious hanging and turning mechanism.
