Description

SX 39 SE ST GILES ON THE HEATH EAST PANSON

5/38 East Panson Farmhouse
-

II

Farmhouse. C17 core, extended probably in the C18. Cob on stone rubble footings,
whitewashed and rendered, corrugated asbestos roof, formerly thatched, gabled at left
end, hipped at right end. Large projecting stone stack at left end, axial stack with
brick shaft.
The original plan may have been 2 rooms with a through passage and the stack of a
hall/kitchen backing on to the passage with an unheated service room beyond the
passage. In a second phase the service room was extended and heated at the left end
giving a kitchen beyond the passage and turning the former hall into a parlour. An
unheated rear left wing may belong to the same period and have been used as a dairy
with accommodation over. A C20 stair has been inserted in the passage replacing a
stair which previously existed in the rear left wing.
2 storeys. Asymmetrical 3-window front with a C20 glazed porch into the through
passage at the left. Late C19 and C20 2- and 3-light casements with glazing bars.
The rear door of the passage is under a sloping slated roof carried on a stone wall
to the left.
Interior C20 grates said to conceal earlier features, the left-hand room said to
have large joists conceal behind the plaster. Pegged roof trusses.
