Description

BROADWOODWIDGER
SX 49 SW
6/38 Middle West Week
-
GV II
House. Circa early to mid C18, the west end remodelled probably in the late C19.
Cob on stone rubble footings, whitewashed and plastered to the front with a slate
roof gabled at ends. 1 large projecting stone stack with set-offs and a cob chimney
shaft at the right end, 1 rendered cob axial stack.
The original plan was probably single depth and 2-rooms wide with a 2 storey
farmbuilding adjoining at the left (west) end. The higher end room only may have
been heated, serving as a hall/kitchen. A rear right outshut does not appear to be
integral and was probably added in the C19 when the axial stack may have been
inserted. The roof has been raised and the left-hand end has been converted to house
accommodation giving a 3-room plan. 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 4-window front with a
front door to the right-hand giving direct access to the right-hand room and a
further entrance into the left-hand room. Ground floor windows are C20 casements of
2- and 3-lights, 3 right-hand first floor windows are C20 and C19 2-light casements
with glazing bars, first floor window left is a 3-light casement, 6 panes per light.
The projecting stack at the right end has a semi-circular bread oven with a slate
top.
Interior Large fireplace at the right-hand end has stone rubble jambs and a plain
timber lintel, exposed joists of slender scantling. Roofspace not inspected. Middle
West Week is marked on a map of 1760.
