4/65 East Croft Farmhouse
- II
Farmhouse. Probably medieval origins, remodelled in the C17. Whitewashed rendered
cob on stone rubble footings, corrugated asbestos roof gabled at ends, formerly
thatched, axial stone stack and end stacks.
Internal evidence suggests a medieval open hall house. The probable development is
that the lower end and passage were ceiled over in the circa late C16 leaving the
hall and inner room open until the C17 when the hall stack was inserted and the hall
and inner room ceiled over. Access to the first floor was probably via a newel stair
to the right of the hall stack, the stair no longer exists. The C17 plan, which is
largely complete, was a 3 room and through passage house with the stack backing on to
the passage and heated lower end inner rooms. A short projection on the front to the
left of the passage may be an C18 addition, rear right service rooms under a lean-to
roof and a front lean-to to the hall are probably C19. The replacement of the newel
stair by a straight stair against the front wall of the hall is either an C18 or C19
modification.
2 storeys. Long asymmetrical 5-window front with irregular fenestration of late C19
and C20 casements with glazing bars. The lower end, to the left, has a short 2-
storey projection, gabled to the front, single-storey lean-to addition to the hall on
the front to the right. A sloping corrugated asbestos roof between the lean-to and
the projection forms the porch. The front doorway to the passage is circa early C16
with a chamfered triangular timber lintel pegged into chamfered timber jambs which
have been partly concealed by later planks.
Interior The hall has exposed chamfered ceiling beams with ogee stops and a feature
which may be a deep jetty in front of the fireplace, which has granite jambs, a cloam
oven and a concealed timber lintel. Some C18 doors, C19 hall bench with panelled
back. The lower end room fireplace has a roughly chamfered cambered lintel with a
run-out stop. The feet of the principal rafters are visible on the first floor, 1
truss has curved feet. No access to roofspace at time of survey (1985) but a
medieval roof is likely to exist. The rear of the through passage has been partly
blocked.
