Description

BROADWOODWIDGER THORNE MOOR
SX 38 NE
7/63 Slowhand Cottage
-
II
GV
Cottage. Circa late C17/early C18 shell with C19 alterations and a C20 lean-to
addition. Colourwashed rendered cob with a wheat reed thatched roof hipped at the
left end and gabled at the right end, stone stack at right gable end. The original
plan seems to have been a 2-room cottage with 1 heated room and a rear door opposed
to the front door. The ground and first floor ceilings appear to have been
reconstructed in the C19 and a straight circa early C20 stair now blocks the rear
doorway. C20 lean-to addition adjoins at the left end. 2 storeys. Approximately
symmetrical 2-window front with 3 buttresses and a gabled central porch with slate
roof and a squint in the left return. Fenestration of C20 2- and 3-light casements
with 6 and 8 panes per light, all with slate sills. The C20 addition is stone rubble
and also has casement windows with glazing bars.
Interior The partitions between the left and right-hand rooms no longer exists, a
straight stair has been inserted in the centre. The fireplace has stone rubble
jambs, a chamfered stopped lintel and a semi-circular bread oven which projects
beyond the exterior wall. Exposed joists, unplastered between. The first floor has
a C19 boarded ceiling. Roofspace not inspected but pegged trusses said to survive.
