ASHREIGNEY
COTTWOOD
Lower Cottwood Cottage

GV
II

Cottage. Circa early C18 with C19 and C20 additions. Plastered cob and rubble
walls. Gable ended asbestos slate roof. Projecting plastered rubble stack with
brick shaft at right gable end.
Plan: originally likely to have had 1-room plan although it is possible that there
was a very small service room at the left-hand end. Fireplace at right gable end.
1 storey addition made at right-hand end with C20 leanto added against the end of
it.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 2-window front. 3 to ground floor. C19
casement with small panes at centre on ground floor, otherwise early C20 2 and 3-
light casements, all in small, probably original, openings. Lower gabled ended C19
addition at right-hand end has 2 C20 casements and a C20 leanto against its right
gablew end. In the wall of the original section, towards the left-hand end are 2
small bee-boles.
Interior inaccessible at time of survey but seen to contain an open fireplace with
wooden lintel.
This is a relatively unaltered cottage which still retains an unspoilt and
traditional appearance.
