Farmhouse. Early C17 or earlier origins heavily remodelled in early - mid C17 with
C19 additions. Rendered cob and rubble walls. Slate roof, gabled to right end
hipped to left. 4 brick stacks, 2 axial, 1 at right gable-end and 1 rear lateral
stack to the left-hand section.
Plan: originally likely to have been 3-room-and-through-passage plan but only 1
room at the left-hand end is recognizably part of the old house and even this room
is puzzling because it has 2 lateral fireplaces - 1 on the front wall and 1 on the
rear. The remainder of the house consists of 2 main rooms with a stairhall and
while obviously C19 in character its asymmetrical form suggests that it is likely to
be a heavy remodelling of an older house rather than a completely new build. C19
service wing at rear with lean-to adjoining it.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 5-window front incorporating lower 1-window
range to the left representing the older part of the house which has C20 3-light
casement to left of large chimney stack projection, now truncated at eaves. The
taller range has early C19 16-pane sashes on the 1st floor and ground floor right,
20-pane tripartite sash on the ground floor to left. Gabled C19 porch with
round arched doorway to right of centre which has 6-panel door behind. Lean-to
against left-hand end. At rear is hipped wing to centre with outshut against its
right-hand side.
Interior: left-hand end room has C17 lateral fireplace at front with roll-moulded
jambs and wooden lintel which has had its edge hacked off. Heavy chamfered ceiling
beam. On the rear wall of the room is a C19 open fireplace. The remodelled right-
hand part of the house contains C19 joinery such as 6-panelled doors and a staircase
with chamfered balusters and newel post.
