Terrace of 4 houses, now house to left and flats, and attached
railings. c1820-30. Ashlar over brick with concealed mansard
roof and brick party-wall stacks; wrought- and iron verandahs,
balcony and area railings.
PLAN: double-depth plan with side stairhalls and service wings
to rear.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys with basement, 12 first-floor windows, 3
per house. Rusticated ground floor with voussoirs over
openings, first- and second-floor bands, crowning frieze and
cornice. 6/6 sashes where original (to second floor),
otherwise mainly 1/1 sashes, those to ground floor have
cambered heads, all in plain reveals. Alternate left and right
entrances: flights of roll-edged steps to 5-panel doors with
Greek key motif to frieze and fanlights, that to No.20 has
batwing and circle glazing. Left return has a 6/6 sash per
floor, otherwise blind openings, floor bands.
INTERIOR: noted as retaining original joinery including
panelled shutters to most windows and tooled architraves; Nos
18 and 20 have moulded cornices and ceiling friezes; some
narrow-open-well staircases with stick balusters and wreathed
handrails, otherwise not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: first floor has Carron Company
double-heart-and-anthemion motif balcony to left (No.18) and
to other 3 verandahs. Similar area railings, and to sides of
steps, but with lancet railings at left and right ends with
urn finials to stanchions.
HISTORICAL NOTE: the terrace appears on Merrett's Map of 1834,
but not on the 1820 Post Office Map.
A distinguished terrace in the Palladian tradition,
particularly notable for the iron balconies and balconies. The
terrace is set on rising ground a little above London Road, an
important approach to Cheltenham
