2 terraced houses, now offices and attached railings.
c1820-25, shown as laid out on the Post Office Map of 1820,
with later alterations. Stucco over brick with slate roof and
tall reddish-brown brick party-wall stack with cornice; iron
area railings.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys on basement, 3 first-floor windows. Stucco
detailing includes first- and second-floor bands; crowning
frieze, cornice and blocking course. Mainly 6/6 sashes, taller
to first floor and with sills; three 8-pane French windows to
ground floor. Basement has plank door and 3-light window.
Entrances: that to No.2 at left, flight of roll-edged steps to
double 4-panel doors in Doric pilastered surround with frieze,
cornice and blocking course. Otherwise entrance to return.
Right return: 3 storeys on basement, 3 first-floor windows.
The left end is taller. Plinth. Stucco detailing includes
first-floor band and continuous second-floor sill band at left
and centre. Off-centre left entrance: flight of steps to
6-panel double doors in pilastered surround with hood on
corbel brackets, overlight with sunburst glazing bars and
architrave above. 6/6 sashes to left, centre part has two
tripartite windows with 4/4 between 2/2 sashes; to right a
full-height canted bay with two 6/6 sashes to front between
2/2 sashes.
INTERIOR: retains original joinery including panelled
shutters, otherwise not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: lancet railings to sides of steps and to
forecourt, with urn finials to stanchions.
Forms a group with John Dower House, Crescent Place (qv) and
No.42, Clarence Street (qv).
