8/74 The Manor Farm House

GV II


House. Late C16, extended in C17 and mid C19. Early ranges are timber
framed and rendered. C19 front block is red brick with flared headers.
Tiled roofs. A 3 bay C16 range to rear left with an addition to rear
right at right angles to form an L, inner angle filled and 4 window
front block added in C19. All 2 storeys. C19 front block has entrance to
centre, half glazed door with margin lights in a segmental head, open
gabled porch with chamfered timbers. Single glazing bar sashes, recessed
with gauged brick segmental heads. First floor windows break eaves to
left with bargeboarded gablets. 2 bays to right in a projecting gabled
crosswing with bargeboards. Cross axial ridge stack to right of centre.
Right gable end has a ground floor window and bargeboards. Left gable
end has a 2 storey canted bay window with similar sashes. Lower and
earliest range extends to rear left with ground floor lean-to outshuts.
C19 flush moulded frame glazing bar sashes, French windows. At junction
with C19 front block is an early stack with a rebuilt shaft. Rear gable
end of early range has a brick plinth, ground floor 2 light casement,
first floor flush moulded frame glazing bar sash, attic hatch opening.
To left or rear is C17 range, ground floor-plank door with hoodboard,
C20 casement, first floor 20 pane glazing bar sash. Right return from
front is 3 bays, all separately gabled. That to rear is earliest with a
steeper pitch, ground floor 6 raised panelled architraved door, later
lean-to outshut and external stack. Taller C19 block to left has a large
6 light mullion and transom window on ground floor, first floor 2 light
casement. Small lower block adjoining brick front range has an entrance
with patterned glazed door with margin lights, hood, first floor 2 light
casement. All with moulded bargeboards. Interior: ground floor chamfered
binding beams of large scantling, early panelled cupboards flanking
fireplace. Formerly known as Hoare's Manor. (J. Wilkerson, Two Ears
of Barley, 1969).
