Farmhouse. Late medieval former open hall house, N wing C16, hall
floored over and house altered early C17, renovated 1980s. Timber frame
on brick sill, roughcast. Red brick casing to S front and W gable, and W
side of N wing. E elevation roughcast with plain margins. A T-shaped,
1 1/2-storeys house on W side of farm courtyard facing S. S range has a
2-bays hall with smoke blackening of roof, evidence for twin service
doors to E end with stair entrance at N end of same partition, and rear
door leading into C16 N wing which has been shortened at N end. S front
has 4 gabled dormers at the eaves and 3 3-lights casement windows to
ground floor. Entrance now into upper bay of hall. 2 gabled dormers to E
side of N wing and C17 chimney with back-to-back fireplaces at junction
of the 2 wings. N wing a kitchen and service room. Parlour in W bay of S
range largely rebuilt. New stair in NW angle in 1980s. Interior has
unusually large original hall with smoke blackened clasped-purlin roof,
heavy square-section curved braces to tie-beams, edge-halved scarf joint
in wallplate, close-studded partition at W end of hall with very heavy
tie-beam. Close studding in 1st floor of N wing and 5-light diamond
mullioned window in E wall.
