An. Man-made cave underneath the road. Bottle shaped, 28 ft deep, lit by round
grating in pavement. Numerous C13 or C14 carvings represent a crucifixion, Saint
Christopher, Saint Catherine, a king and queen, figures on horse-back, etc. Formerly
painted but paint now faded. Later entrance passage, 1790. RCHM, p 175; VCH,
