Methodist chapel, now auction rooms. 1875. Pennington and
Bridgen of Manchester. Brick and ashlar with slate roof.
Classic chapel plan with 3-sided gallery. The C20 chapel
which adjoins at the rear is not included in this entry. 2-
storey 5-bay entrance front has full height distyle Ionic
portico in antis in a grand manner. Rusticated stone plinth,
giant corner pilasters, dentilled cornice, entablature
inscribed TRINITY CHAPEL and 3-bay dentilled pediment with
cross in tympanum. Enriched entablatures with antefixae to
ground floor outer bay windows and semi-circular headed
first floor window with architrave and enriched panel
between the two. 7-bay side elevations to a related design.
Interior: staircases flank the portico and lead to the
gallery which has a panelled pitch pine parapet with
enriched plaster band and is supported on cast iron columns
with elaborate capitals. The central wooden pulpit stands in
front of the former organ arch (now blocked) with panelled
soffit and giant 1/2 columns and pilasters. The ceiling is
coved and has an enriched panelled cupola supporting a large
wrought iron light fitting. Stained glass. The design was
won in a competition.
