Built mid C17 by Humphrey Shalcross for his daughter, afterwards a farmhouse, recently
extended for use as a conference centre. A square building of 2 storeys in red brick
with hipped tile roof with a central chimney stack in which the square shafts are
set diagonally. Moulded brick cornice at first floor level. Main elevation has 3
windows to the first floor above 2 to the ground floor, all in brick surrounds which
have obviously been enlarged. Wood mullions and transoms of recent date. Brick
plinth. Two hipped dormer windows to attic storey. One window to the side retains
its original form of 4 mullion lights. Door in modern brick surround. The central
chimney stack, recently restored, has a brick oven incorporated. Interior retains
timber framing. An original plain stone fireplace. (See A Short History of Digswell
Lodge by Dora Ward and Others 1963).
