Farmhouse, now house. C16, partly rebuilt early C17 with mid-C18 and
mid-C19 alterations and additions; restored mid-C20. Part timber-framed
with rendered infill, brick replacement walling and refacing; part sandstone
and brick with sandstone dressings; plain tiled roofs. Hall and intersecting
cross-wing; three-bay hall part aligned east/west with central north porch
wing and large central sandstone chimney with two star-shaped ridge stacks
forming baffle-entry plan. Cross-wing is of two framed bays and intersects
at the east end of the hall part; it has two external chimneys, the northern-
most one is sandstone and has two star-shaped brick stacks. Two storeys and
attic with rear dormer; two-course band at first floor level to rear of cross-
wing. Framing: cross-wing north gable end has close-set studding; first floor
is jettied on shaped brackets; remains of collar and tie-beam truss with two
collars and struts (partly painted in); sides and rear of cross-wing refaced
and rebuilt. North front elevation: hall part has a ground floor stone 3-light
splayed mullioned and transomed window and a 3-light C20 casement; two first
floor 3-light splayed mullioned windows; porch wing has a 2-light similar
mullioned first floor window and a round-headed archway with slightly project-
ing keyblock and impost blocks; ledged and battened door within. Cross-wing
gable end has ground floor C20 bay window and a 3-light casement with leaded
lights. Interior: stop-chamfered main ceiling beams. Large back-to-back fire-
place in hall part on south side of which is dog-leg oak staircase with moulded
strings and handrail, turned balusters and large square newels with shaped
finials. A C18 dairy wing adjoins the west side elevation with a 3-light
mullioned window add two rectangular lights in its west front elevation. To
tile rear of this is a C19 service wing. Also rear wing to south of hall.
The house stands on a moated site which has been filled in on the north side.
