Farmhouse. Late C16 or early C17 with C19 alterations and additions. Roughcast
walls with cement plinth, under graduated greenslate roof with roughcast banded
chimney stacks. Central part 2 storeys, 3 bays with contemporary left
single-bay wing and right gabled single-bay wing. Off-centre C19 red sandstone
gabled porch, with Tudor-arched doorway under shield of Brougham arms. 2-, 3-
and 4-light stone-mullioned windows in double-chamfered surrounds under
continuous hoodmoulds. Left wing has similar 2-light windows under hoodmoulds.
Right wing has similar 4-light windows under hoodmoulds. Right return wall has
larger C19 windows, now with C20 casements, under hoodmoulds. One rear 2-light
stone-mullioned window. Interior has Tudor-arched stone fireplace in right
wing, panelled doors and beamed ceilings. Used as a hospital in World War I,
originally called Pembroke House. See RCHM, Westmorland, p.63. Rear extensions
are not of interest.
