Farmhouse. Probably early C17, extended and aggrandised in early C18.
Timber-framed C17 part with brick infill panels, C18 brick extensions, now
painted and plain tiled roofs with external stacks to south side, east and
north ends. L-plan with rectangular three-bay timber-framed part aligned
east/west extended by one bay at each end and given a C18 pavilion wing
to the north side of the west end. The C17 part has one storey and attic
becoming two storeys in the east C18 former stable extension. C18 wing
has two storeys and attic over cellar. East elevation to road: 1:1:2 windows,
gable front to left has 3-light wooden mullioned window to first floor over
central C20 stable door; 3-light C19 casement over 4-panelled late C19 door
with bracketted canopy forms the link with the two-window pavilion part which
has plat bands between storeys, square headed window openings with shouldered
corners containing three cross-casements (the first floor left and attic
window areas being blind to this elevation), dentilled brick eaves cornice
and hipped roof (gabled to rear) with large end stack to north. North
elevation of C17 part has two gabled dormers with leaded casements above
exposed timber-framing three panels high with two diagonal braces in which
are set three windows in two groups under plank weatherings. The left window
is a 2-light casement, adjoining to the right is a wooden mullioned 4-light
window with ovolo internal mouldings; the right hand window is a 4-light C19
wrought iron casement. To the left the C18 stable extension has a dentilled
brick eaves cornice. Interior: principal roofs of C17 part have deep chamfers
some with stops; two fielded 6-panelled c1700 doors in passage between two
wings. Eleven early C17 turned balusters between stairs in present kitchen at
west end of C17 part. Two ledged doors upstairs have two central superimposed
fielded panels in moulded surrounds on the entrance sides. (RCHM, Vol II, p 9).
