Farmhouse. Circa C15 core with later (especially C17 and C19) alterations and
additions. Cob, stone plinth, rendered, under gabled-end thatched roof. Originally
a 3-room through-passage but much modified by the remodelling of a kitchen to the
right (C17) and the addition of a thatched rear parlour wing (C17 and C19). 2
internal end stacks with brick shafts, a large external rubble back lateral stack to
the middle chamber with moulded cob under added brick shaft; and 2 axial stacks to
rear wing, one with moulded cap. 2 storeys throughout.
Front: A long 4-window range; entrance to passage set left of centre under rustic
latticed open-work timber porch with thatched roof, and immediately left of this a
stair turret with one stair window, 2-light timber casement with 8 leaded panes to
each light and some glazing bars. 2 windows to each floor to left and to right,
those above, of 2 and 3 lights all under boarded eyebrow eaves, timber casements
C19. The 3 ground-floor windows to the left all 3-light under heavy lintels, the
sills set very close to the ground; present kitchen window, also 3-light but
smaller. All casements timber, C19 or later.
Rear: above continuous lean-to three 3-light windows set in old frames (the lintels
chamfered), one casement with 8 leaded panes to each light and glazing bars. Rear
wing (farmyard elevation) with two 3-light casement windows and one 3-light early
C19 sash window (to 1st floor), and three 4 and 8-light openings with iron bars and
internal shutters.
Interior: Right-hand room (the remodelled kitchen) has a large end fireplace (much
renewed) with (to the right) a large cupboard space, perhaps formerly a smoking
chamber, and (to the left) a similar space lit by a small window, probably the
former newel; beam with shallow chamfer and no stops. Wide cupboard spaces (with
late C18 panelled doors) between the kitchen and the middle chamber probably occupy
the original cross passage. This room has an inserted framed ceiling of beams of
composite moulded profile forming 6 squares which breaks through into the present
entrance passage (which contains the later main stairs): this was the former hall,
the roof above it being smoke-blackened. Fielded panelled internal shutters to this
and the left hand room, which is a large chamber with no exposed beams.
Roof: Kitchen roof sealed. Hall and parlour, 4 bays; principals (possibly jointed
crucks), morticed and side-pegged at apex, diagonal ridge piece, purlins trenched;
right-hand end hip cruck. The 2 principals above Hall smoke-blackened. Rear wing,
6 bays, all principals morticed and side pegged and crossed at apex.
