House. Probably late C17 or earlier, said by owner to be documented in 1521, C20
alterations. Colourwashed and rendered, probably cob on stone footings; thatched
roof with a plain ridge, hipped at ends; axial stack, left end stack.
Plan: End on to the road. Single depth plan, 3 rooms wide, possibly originally with
a cross passage to left of centre. The front door, which opens directly into the
centre room, was formerly further to the left (photograph). There are back to back
fireplaces in the axial stack to right of centre, heating the 2 right hand rooms.
The left end (putative lower end) stack may be C19 or C20.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 4 window front with a C20 lean-to porch on posts
with a red tiled roof and a C19 or C20 plank front door, leading into the centre
room. Small 2- and 3-light timber casement windows of the C20, some with glazing
bars.
Interior: Chamfered crossbeam to the right hand room, the centre has an open
fireplace with a chamfered lintel.
Roof: Not inspected.
There may be some documentary confusion between this building and Hembury Fort House,
formerly known as Cockenhayes, q.v.
