Probably originally one house circa 1820. A 2½ storey rectangular red
brick block. Ripped slate roof with wide eaves. The south end (Church
House) has a symmetrical front of 5 windows, the 2 outer ones each side
in shallow brick bows. Recessed sashes, glazing bars intact, flat brick
arches, thin block sills. Stucco band across front between upper ground
and 1st floors. Bowed porch raised on brick base to upper ground floor
level has splayed steps and iron balustrade. 2 iron columns support entab-
lature which is bowed out, from stucco band between storeys, as a canopy.
Double doors of 6 fielded panels with side lights panelled below. Flank
ing thin panelled pilasters to reeded doorhead. Large semi-circuler fan-
light with delicate, fainted radial glazing bars and architrave over.
The wall around is stuccoed. The west front has 4 flat roofed dormers
with glazing bars to sashes, one a 2-light casement. 7 windows on this
front, some blind, and a 3 bay Tuscan verandah with tent-roofed trellis
balcony above. The central window giving on to it: an oeuil de boeuf.
Other windows recessed sashes, glazing bars intact, 3 with Venetian shut-
ters on 2nd floor, 2 to left of verandeh on13t floor have delicate iron
balconies supported by shaped brackets and tent-shaped canopies. The
double doors beneath the verandah have 6 panels, top pair fielded small
horizontal ovals, the centre pair larger and set vertically with wreath
mouldings, the bottom panels flush with diamonds inset, Reeded reveals
and doorcase with iron head corner blocks. The entrance to "Aurora" is
by a pedimented doorcase with Doric columns. Door of 5 flush panels,
rectangular fanlight with 3 pointed panes, Above on 1st floor a pointed
2-light casement. This north end of the building is stuccoed, as is the
part of wall behind 3 bay verandah/balcony. Dominating position in open
grouping of this part of Sidmouth.
