Chest tomb. Mid C18. Freestone. Grand tall chest, rectangular on plan, with a
moulded plinth, panelled sides, corner balusters and a moulded lid. Finely-carved
armorial bearings in relief on the lid with an inscription in good lettering stating
that the tomb commemorates Thomas Balle died 1749, and was erected by Thomas Hussey.
The chest is surrounded by privet planting.
Thomas Balle was the owner. of Mamhead in the C18 and erected the obelisk (qv).
