2 adjoining houses, formerely one build. Circa mid C17, probably extended later at
the left end. Colourwashed rendered cob and stone rubble; roof of Firdale thatched
and hipped at right end, roof of Briar Cottage replaced with tile; axial stack and
left end stack.
Plan: Unusual single depth plan, originally 3 rooms wide, lower end to the left
with a passage entrance, hall stack backing onto passage and a narrow unheated
service room to the right of the hall and possibly a lower end kitchen to the left,
which has been extended.
Exterior: 2 storeys, Asymmetrical 3:4 window front, front door to Firdale to left
of centre, Briar Cottage entered on rear. C19 and C20 timber casement windows with
glazing bars, those to Firdale with enlarged embrasures.
Interior: Rich in carpentry. The hall in Firdale, has a chamfered lintel to the
fireplace with bar stops and a chamfered crossbeam with chamfered joists with bold
rounded stops. A chamfered crossbeam and exposed joists also survive to the right
hand room.
Roof: A side pegged jointed cruck roof structure with collars lap-dovetailed into
the principal rafters survives throughout Firdale and over the right end of Briar
Cottage, the purlins threaded just below the collar joint.
