SX 76 NE BROADHEMPSTON

Farmhouse. C17 or earlier with extensive C19 and C20 additions and alterations.
Rendered rubble walls and 2 similar stacks one at left gable end and one lateral
stack at the front, projecting on 1 side. Slate roof, gabled to left end and half-
hipped to front of wing.
Originally 3-room and through passage plan probably with screens passage; gable end
stack heating lower room and front lateral fireplace to hall. Extended by wing at
higher end which was originally barn, converted in C20. C19/C20 outshuts added at
rear.
2 storeys. Asymmetrical 5-window front with 4 windows to wing. C20 2-light
casements, first floor right of centre is 3-light, all have small panes except for
first floor far right. C20 single light casement to wing on first floor with French
windows below. Gabled C20 glazed porch to left of centre with glazed door, similar
leanto porch to right in angle with wing. At rear is small gabled wing to right of
centre and C19/C20 outshuts to its left.
Interior : contains a number of C17 features. The hall has 2 cross beams,
chamfered with bar and hollow step stops; 1 of these goes into the wall above the
fireplace where it is supported on a chamfered wooden corbel. The lateral fireplace
has an ovolo moulded wooden lintel. The lower room has a good quality complete
beamed ceiling with 3 chamfered cross beams which have hollow step stops and joists
similarly decorated. The wooden fireplace lintel is also the same. According to
the owner the partition between this room and the passage is a concealed plank and
muntin screen, there is likely to be a similar one the other side of the passage.
Roof space not inspected but thought to contain C20 roof timbers.
Despite alterations this house contains some good quality C17 features.
